The Orange Prize for Fiction, the UK’s only annual book award for fiction written by a woman, announces its 2011 shortlist.

Agent Jenny Bent thinks of herself as “a conduit, not a gatekeeper,” and she is “somewhat gleefully celebrating the fact that electronic publishing is really blowing apart the thinking that we in publishing somehow know better and have better taste than the average reader.”

Though sales for print books are down, the largest publishing houses in the U.S. are in the black, thanks to “cost controls and skyrocketing e-book sales.”

The authors of these e-books might not see this increase. I strongly advise every published author to read Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s post on royalty statements.

Amazon sold the trade paperback rights of 10 titles to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, keeping the digital rights for its Amazon Encore and Amazon Crossing imprints.
